EMMY NOMINEE, CINEMATOGRAPHER JAMES CHRESSANTHIS, ASC LITERALLY RUNS THE DISTANCE FOR ESPN2's "FOUR MINUTES"
Los Angeles, CA --- He used SIX cameras. He has FIVE other competitors in the Emmy category for Outstanding Cinematography for a mini-series or movie. But for James Chressanthis, ASC, FOUR MINUTES - the ESPN2 Original Movie, for which he is nominated, encompasses THREE loves: Cinematography, Art and Running. This is the second Outstanding Cinematography Emmy nomination for Chressanthis. His first was for the 2001 biography Life With Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows. Will this Emmy nomination be the ONE? Currently, Chressanthis is Director of Photography and one of the directors of the CBS primetime hit series Ghost Whisperer starring Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Chressanthis' artistic vision for FOUR MINUTES took on a life of its own. He donned period spiked running shoes to test a quarter mile track, while capturing the authentic feeling of training for a race.
"I trained with Actor, Jamie Maclauchlin, who portrayed Bannister and ran with the tiny Ikonoscop Super-16 miniature camera. I wanted to give the audience the feeling of being inside the pack, the screaming crowd pressing in upon the runners as they sprint into the final stretch," explains Chressanthis.
For the majestic mile run, Chressanthis captured the diverse range emotion of the athletic exertion from the runner's point-of-view, to the elation of victory, overcoming the 'they said it couldn't be done obstacle.' But it was the training that was the most challenging part of production. "Thirty percent of the film involved traning or racing. Each race in Bannister's career was given a distinct character: from the ragged spiking of his early races, to the cold primitive night races - and ending with the powerful grace of the record breaking run," states Chressanthis.
FOUR MINUTES - an ESPN Original Entertainment (EOE) production - was the first-ever original movie to premiere on ESPN2. This 'little film that could' in this year's Emmy race is about Roger Bannister, who ran the first sub-four-minute mile in history, with a time of 3:59.4 on May 6, 1954. Bannister, the 25-year-old native of Harrow, England became a neurologist and the first Chairman of the British Sports Council and was knighted for these services in 1975.
